London & South East U18 and U23 Weightlifting Championships Many thanks to Keith Morgan for staging this event. There were 32 lifters in total. I think this the second year running we have had a reasonable number of lifters lifting for a place in the bodyweights – which has got to be good for progress! The added IT peripherals, main platform monitor and competition recorder monitor, that Keith has had installed now stops the coaches swarming around the Speaker. Ivan Abadjiev & the Bulgarian Weightlifting System Dave Woodhouse has submitted a very stimulating article on the Bulgarian method. We do not condone the use of illegal substances, but , even if the Bulgarian method may be impossible for 'clean' liifters and those who also have a day's work to do, there is much to learn from them. Bear in mind that although it is said, by emigrees from former Soviet countries, that they never publish their real methhods, Abadjiev, the coach behind the Bulgarian success, has nothing to lose by telling the truth. In a translation of a lecture he gave in Finland he appears, after many denials, to be accepting that his methods were backed up by the use of 'illegal' substances. Apart from that he had the assistance of the state which allowed him to recruit about 40 potential young lifters every year, of whom only 35 were retained after a year of full time sports school. In this way, 'clean' or not, he was able to work primarily with lifters whose physical and mental attributes were entirely suitable to outstanding performances. I do hope readers will feel free to comment on this article. Dave is a Sports Science Graduate from Bath, and studied for a Masters at Brunel University. Currently he is coaching and training at St Mary's University college. His introduction to Weightlifting, after a career in athletics was at Woking.
