RESULTS OF CURRENT LIFT OF THE QUARTER AND LAST YEARS COMPETITION Once again a member of Woking club heads the list in the Pullover and Press competition ending in Dec 2007: Chris Chea. The next three lifters were also from the Woking club. The club positions were: 1) Woking 2) woking Power 3) Enfield 4)Vectis and Standlake. Let`s hope other clubs will swell the ranks this year. Especially meritorious were the performances of that aged lifter R.J. Smith, and several 60+ personnel. In the overall lists for the year, once again a Woking lifter came top; second place going to a Standlake lifter. From the same club a very good performance by the elderly R.J. Smith, and followed by some stalwart lifting by a number of 60+ never say die people. Lest it be thought that all-round lifting is dominated by veterans it must be pointed out that four juniors also featured strongly. It is possible that featured clubs are run by enthusiasts for the Odd lifts, but anyone can participate – especially if you want to try something different!
(info to club secretaries and their members) It is possile that most club members ae not aware of, or don't know much about all-round Lifting
(or the Odd Lifts as they are usally called.) Weight lifters tend to concentrate on Olympic or Power movements.
But there are also 27 Odd Lifts you can try! There are Divisional Records to aim for (not many claimed) which need only one ref
(who sould be Fully Qualified referee) to witness and British Records (needing three refs One of whom at least must be FQ)..
SE Divisional, records are kept by Tony Finlay, 126 Sutherland Avenue, Biggin Hill, Kent, TN16 3HJ who holds serveral British
All-Round lifting records (at his age and bodyweight). His email address is: docfinlay@supanet.com and phone is 01959 570814.
British records are kept by Jim Smith, of Longwood House, Standlake, Witney, Oxon, OX8 7RP, email : silentsmith@talk21.com
Why not have a go? The division wants to encourage participation in these lifts. There are 10 bodyweight categories: 52, 56, 60, 67.5, 75, 82.5, 90, 100, 110, 110+.
Age categories as in other lifting: Junior, Senior, Master, (over 40, over 50, over 60,over 70+) these 27 deserve to be tried since records remain to be set up and they also provide a good bodybuiling routine as well.
Try them, (or one of them) and if interested in having your name in the record books, get in touch with Tony Finlay and he will give you any futher info you want. Certificates are awarded as proof of your prowess.
The lifts are open to females also. You need of course to be a member of BWLA. The SE Div, Sec is Brian Hamill at : brianhamill@onetel.com
Right Hand press The rules for correct performance are given in the current handbook. -(or see Tony Finlay) Like all BWLA lifts, the All-Round lifts are governed by bodyweight. HAPPY LIFTING! The minimuim acceptable poundages are based on the Certificate of Merit scheme in the BWLA Handbook. (The sixth grade)
In addition one kilo less than the above is acceptable for over 50s, two kilos for over 60s and three kilos for over 70s.
Female standards are about 20% less.

As odd lift bod for the SE I have heard on the grape vine that our Div. Sec. ,one Brian Hamill, has posted (at his bodyweight and in his age category, 70 years) a two hands curl lift of some 43 kilos (in the 67k category) . I find this hard to believe. On the other hand if he were to do it IN FRONT of me I would believe it, but this is doubtful. Maybe of course he is on liberal doses of ginseng. Perhaps he will reply denying these rumours.
Tony Finlay (SE Div All-Round Lifting Registrar) To the editor Tony Finlay daring to question my probity is a scandal sir! His suggestion that he might witness my superb athletic feats is more than welcome as it will clear the fog of suspicion that he has created. However he is one of just four fully qualified referees in our region and so, he may be forced to travel to see my feat, not to mention my feet. As I am reliably advised that his adapted reliant robin is unreliably reliant, he may never make it. Meanwhile my curls are improving thanks to the ministrations of my local coiffeur and his ginseng curling lotion. Yours truly Brian Hamill I see BH has replied at last. The latest thing is he claims that no-one over 40 i.e. a "Master" can better him on the curl -at least at his bodyweight! Let`s see how he does overall at the end of the lift of quarter season. (Is he anygood at other Odd lifts?) T.F. Re the further insults and innuendos penned by the mighty A Finlay ( or do i mean by the mighty pen of A Finlay) I may add that my very strict barbell curl is now up to 46 k at 66 k and 70+. However my R H DB press is stuck at 26. I was only OK on the 2 hand dumbbells swing, but let's see how we go on the Left hand barbell Clean and Jerk! I am sure of 20 K., pathetic but better than Dr. F I'll be bound. Anyway my club topped the nation on the Swing and I will take the credit for teaching the skills well, if no one stops me. It is good to see the participation of the new Sussex College club in the Lift of the Quarter. I am now working on Crossfit Sussex, a commercial gym chain devoted to gut wrenching free weight and kettlebell training with heavy weights, high reps and no rests. The Overhead Anyhow with barbell event at Woking on 18 May is a chance for such devotees to try their hand in a refereed context. Maybe it can lead to new affiliations to the very exclusive BWLA club. Good news that John Walton has visited them to give hints on weightlifting technique. Will they learn a split, splot or squat method as a result of his ministrations? Whatever, it is good news, and especially as they seem to have a large space and a lot of Olympic bars. Brian Hamil |
