BWLA Junior Referee

In order to bring us into line with many other sports and to increase the number of available and interested referees at our Junior competitions BWLA has decided to introduce a new Officials’ qualification for people aged 15 to 18 years which will be called the BWLA Junior Referee . It is hoped this provide an opportunity for youngsters to develop an interest in assisting with running their sport as well as providing an opportunity to referee.

It is hoped that this new qualification will give youngsters a chance to officiate in their chosen sport and to identify with the challenges this produces and respond to them in a positive way.

Junior referees will only be used for the BWLA u11 , u13, u16 Divisional,County and Club competitions and will only be allowed to operate as side referees with an adult , experienced centre referee. They will only be concerned with the actual refereeing of the two Olympic lifts and with what happens on the competition platform. They will not for example be expected to M/C a competition or to take any other responsibility such a Technical Controller . Their sole purpose will be to judge the two Olympic lifts in conjunction with an experienced , adult , centre referee.

Junior referees will never be allowed to operate on their own or to take part in the other officials’ functions such as weighing-in lifters etc.

Qualification for the role of Junior Referee will be by attendance at a suitable Junior Referees’ Course organised by BWLA and taught by a current Category 1 IWF Referee who has been appropriately trained. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate their knowledge of the relevant IWF rules by successfully completing a Theoretical Examination paper set by BWLA and by passing a basic Practical refereeing test.

Only those rules relevant to the Snatch and Clean and Jerk plus Platform and Competition equipment to be included

In addition they will be required to have knowledge of the basic Health and Safety aspects of refereeing and be familiar with National Occupational Standards(Skills Active level 2 - Officiating).

Once qualified candidates will receive a special T shirt which they must wear whenever they are refereeing. In view of their age there will be a minimum (reduced ) uniform requirement for Junior Referees which will be the above mentioned T shirt plus a smart pair of long track suit bottoms with appropriate footwear. Unless this uniform is worn the candidate will not be allowed to referee.

On achieving the age of 18 Junior referees will be actively encouraged to convert their qualification into that of BWLA Referee by taking the appropriate course.

It is hoped that this qualification will help us to engage the interest of our young lifters and indeed people who do not lift . This will give us a larger pool of Referees for Junior competitions and may enable Weightlifting to be included in the Schools Olympics programme further developing the positive image of our sport.

Chris Freebury delivered the first of our new Junior Referee courses at Wright Robinson School, Manchester in November 2008 and has plans to extend the scheme around the country in 2009 with support from the Weightlifters’ Supporters’ Fund. Nine new Junior Referees successfully completed the one day course and some of them have already been in action in local competitions relieving the burden on other officials and gaining valuable experience.

The current cost of completing the BWLA Junior Referees’ course is £10 per candidate.

Because the course involves elements of National Occupational Standards it is important that potential tutors are appropriately trained. This can be easily accommodated within the current course structure and simply involves attending a course in progress.

The course fee is £10 per candidate. If you are interested please contact:
